The King County Board of Health is made up of three health professionals and eight elected officials who all serve one to three year terms. Earlier this year, the board unanimously voted to endorse safe injection sites and the group has strongly pushed for them to be implemented. In addition, the King County Board of Health has attempted to put steep regulations on crisis pregnancy centers, which are centers that work with pregnant women and provide things like pregnancy tests, counseling, and ultrasounds. These actions by the board prove they are out of touch with the people of King County and they are ignoring the needs of those they are supposed to be representing.
Safe injection sites in King County have recently been proposed as a way to combat the growing opioid epidemic. The King County Board of Health has played a very large role in the attempt to put safe injection sites for heroin in King County. These sites would allow drug users to inject heroin and take other opioids with medical supervision. The plan for safe injection sites that is being pushed by the King County Board of Health would tolerate illegal drug use instead of trying to fix the problem of heroin addiction. Rather than focusing on treatment and getting addicts off of heroin, this board is trying to make it easier to use the drug.
Crisis pregnancy centers are mostly non-profit organizations that provide pregnant women with resources to keep themselves and their baby healthy through the use of pregnancy tests, counseling, ultrasounds, and more. However, the King County Board of Health has been fighting to reduce the positive impact of crisis pregnancy centers. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington and Planned Parenthood have accused crisis pregnancy centers of providing misinformation. Due to these accusations, the King County Board of Health is trying to regulate crisis pregnancy centers so that their impact is not as significant. While these centers have the opportunity to really help pregnant women, the board is fighting to diminish their impact.

These two very recent actions by the board have the potential to really harm the people of King County. It is clear that the board is out of touch and ignoring the needs of those who call King County home.
